Classic and Select vent
Both wear steel louvers, so warm dusty air leaving the stalls has a high exit point at the peak. Select adds fuller trim for a more finished roofline. If airway health is why you are here, start with one of these.
Signature is for the show barn
Signature swaps the louvers for glass window panels. It reads as the centerpiece of a presentation barn, and it is decorative. The window panels do not vent. Choose it when the look leads and a separate vent plan handles the air.
A high exhaust point needs low intake
A louvered cupola is the high end of a ventilation plan, not the whole plan. It pulls best when cool air can enter low, at the soffit, open eave, or a wall vent, sized to match or beat the cupola. Without that intake the air has nowhere to come from. With it, the barn breathes on the stack effect alone.
Passive, with nothing to break
A cupola has no motor, no bearing, no blade to seize the way a whirlybird or a stall fan does. It is a fixed roof detail that keeps working in any season. Some owners still add a powered fan for the hottest days. The cupola does its part quietly underneath it.
What a horse barn cupola does, plainly
A cupola is the louvered box at the peak of the roof. On a barn, the louvered versions give warm, dusty air a way out the top while cooler air enters low, so the air your horses breathe keeps moving instead of sitting.
Warm air rises. In a closed barn it collects in the peak, picks up dust and the smell off the bedding, then settles back into the stalls below. A louvered cupola opens the top of that column so the warm air can leave. As it goes, it draws cooler air in through the soffit, the open eave, or wall vents down low. That moving column is the stack effect, and it runs without a motor.
The cupola is one part of that plan, the high exhaust point. It needs matched low intake to pull against. Size the intake to equal or exceed the cupola opening. With both in place a louvered cupola moves real air. On its own, with the eaves sealed tight, it cannot do much.

Where the air comes in
Look at your eaves before you order. Continuous soffit vents, an open eave, or wall vents low on the gable end give the cupola something to draw. No low intake, no draw.
If you already have a ridge vent
A continuous ridge vent is already a high exhaust running the length of the roof. Adding a louvered cupola over it puts two exhausts on one attic, which can short-circuit the airflow rather than add to it. On a barn that already has a full ridge vent, treat the cupola as mostly a looks decision.

Start with stalls, then size to the roofline
Two numbers matter: how much barn the cupola is venting, and how it looks on the length of the ridge. Here is how to weigh both.
- As a starting point, plan roughly one cupola per four to six stalls. For most horse barns that lands in the 42 to 60 inch range.
- Size to the roofline length, not just the stall count. A cupola that looks big on the ground often looks small on a long stable roof.
- Long stables often look and vent better with two cupolas, spaced for rhythm down the ridge and to balance the airflow across the length.
- Confirm the eaves can let air in low before you settle on a louvered tier, since the cupola needs that intake to pull against.
