Before Installation

Start with inspection and setup.

Do this before cutting, lifting, or fastening anything on the roof.

  • Check the packing list against contents.
  • Inspect for shipping damage and document any issues immediately.
  • Gather drill, sealant, ladder access, and helpers.
  • Confirm the cupola base dimensions and roof opening plan.
  • Call Tanasi Designs before installation day if anything looks off.
Installation Steps

The basic installation path.

Your exact roof condition, pitch, and installer may change the details, but most installs follow this sequence.

  1. Inspect delivery

Check the packing list, inspect for freight damage, and confirm the cupola arrived ready to mount.

  2. Prepare the roof opening

Most installs require a framed curb cut into the roof ridge and matched to the cupola base dimensions.

  3. Lift and position

Center the cupola on the ridge with the base sitting flush on the curb framing.

  4. Secure the base

Fasten the base to the curb using the provided lag bolts and appropriate roof framing.

  5. Seal the perimeter

Apply roofing sealant around the base perimeter and all fastener heads to reduce water intrusion risk.

Crew Planning

Plan lifting by cupola size.

Do not guess on roof lifting. Larger units should be handled by experienced installers or mechanical assistance.

Small

24-30" cupolas

Often manageable with two capable people and safe roof access.

Medium

36-48" cupolas

Plan for additional hands and more controlled positioning.

Large

60-72" cupolas

May require mechanical assistance, jobsite coordination, or a builder crew.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these installation problems.

Most issues come from rushing the prep or sealant work.

  • Do not start if freight damage has not been documented.
  • Do not cut the roof before confirming base dimensions.
  • Do not leave gaps around the base perimeter.
  • Do not skip sealing fastener heads.
  • Do not attempt a large roof lift without enough help.
Installation FAQ

Installation questions before you buy.

Can I install a cupola myself?

Many homeowners can install smaller cupolas with safe roof access, a helper, and basic tools. Larger units should be handled by a builder or installer.

Are lag bolts included?

Yes. Tanasi Designs includes lag bolts with the cupola. You should still have roofing sealant and job-specific tools ready.

Can a cupola go on an existing roof?

Yes, but retrofit installs require careful roof opening, framing, flashing, fastening, and sealing. A qualified builder is recommended if you are unsure.

What should I do if the cupola arrives damaged?

Document the damage immediately, keep the packaging, and contact Tanasi Designs before installation.
